Gas block very close to touching free float rail

#1

Post by JaiYa »

I installed a slim free float handguard/rail. I used a low profile gas block. But, now I'm concerned that it's too close. I can probably get maybe three sheets of paper distance.

What is the rule? If rail and gas block are not making contact, am I still good? The rail doesn't flex at all and there's no concern when benchresting. I'm not sure I can get a gas block a whole lot smaller.

What are your thoughts?

If it doesn't touch it should be fine.

Agreed, as long as it never touches it.

Also Agree!

If you are still concerned,... rapid shoot until really, really hot.

If it starts touching,... take a Dremel to it,... end of concerns!

The barrel will move or wave with each shot but even if it does contact the tube I doubt you will ever notice. Watch high speed video of this online if it interests you. The longer the barrel the more the effect but remember original ARs had hand guards and slings attached to the barrel and had no problems. The variance in the POI of the ammo would cause more of an issue.

Still your talking thousands of an inch so dremel it if you want but I wouldnt worry.

If barrel oscillation is a concern, you will have to compare group sizes, with and without the handguard installed, to confirm interference.

Unless you are intending to do some very long distance shooting, I wouldn't worry about it.

My guess is, you are good to go with a three paper width clearance, but only you can make the final decision.
