AR Pistol question

#1

Post by Ballistic Therapy »

I am interested in getting an AR pistol.
I am not interested in putting one together myself.
I want to get a factory made gun.
I see prices from $500 up to over $2000.

I want to get a good one and what makes one worth a couple grand and some only worth $500 ?
What should I be looking at ?

Quality of component parts and the companies marketing budget.

Decide how much you want to spend, and choose a model that fits your budget. Don't spend $500, but don't spend $2,000, either. $800-$1,200 is a good ballpark.

Do u shoot a lot or a little? Do you like to clean your gun or not so much?. Is this something you would carry with you or leave in the safe? Do you have a lot to spend or not so much? There are a lot of things to think about.

i want a quality gun , that is all.
I only mentioned price because they are all over the place.
As far as cleaning goes. No I do not like to clean my guns , but I do every time I shoot them.
I want opinions on a good quality factory made gun , that is all.

As stated above $800-$1200 sounds reasonable but I am not stuck on any certain price range if the gun is really worth the cost.

Ok I have built them for 350 to 475 and ran the hell out of them. Used a lot of oil never had a problem. I used all blem items no issues. Now if you want gas piston stuff you will be at 1000 and above. If you want stock military basic parts and a pistol length barrel and iron sights nothing special and you buy it from someone 490 to 750. So a plain AR pistol with iron sights and mil spec trigger will be the cheapest. Flat tops are more because u need to find quality sights. A good red dot will be 400 and up. You can upgrade everything from triggers, recievers, barrels muzzle brakes just keep throwing c notes at it. It would be cheapest to build one.

It's an AR, pay as little as possible for it and it will still work just fine.

Everything but the lower for $399.99 with free shipping from PSA.

Daniel Defense makes an excellent AR...a little overpriced, but that is my opinion. Nearly any AR you buy in a gun shop will be quality.

There is no problem buying a factory made gun but often you will find there is something you don't like about it and you will end up making mods or having someone make them for you. Most often with Mil Spec guns, you will be less than happy with the trigger pull. Improving that most often requires you to spend upwards of $200 and more if you pay someone to install it.

Advice on here for you to build it is not for everyone. To build an AR, you will need some basic gunsmithing tools and that will boost the cost. Fine to do so if you also plan to build more ARs or work on other guns, etc. But for a one time AR pistol purchase and with your lack of interest in building one, you should proceed to a well stocked gun shop where you can handle a few different models and have a knowledgeable sales person give you some pointers about features and future potential. If they will allow it, do a trigger pull test and feel the differences. Also note the style of the AR. Do you want to have the iron sights or a flat top and you install your optic or both, etc.

I don't think you have gotten bad advice on here. There are simply a ton of choices and, if you go with a good manufacturer, you will probably be happy.

I was like you with my first AR and didn't want to build it and thought a well known manufacturer would keep me out of trouble. I bought a Smith & Wesson and was happy for a while. But I like doing my own work on guns, for the most part, and have quite a few tools. I have since built 5 ARs including one pistol. Much happier with all of them than with the S & W. I sold it.
