Did I miss this back in May?
Would this affect the AR market? Probably not, as they come in different calibers already.....

Re: New army round
I see a lot 6.8 magazines, followers, uppers and barrels needed in the commercial and the military side of the market. It will make some of us that own machine shops a lot of money. Several manufacturers are already making plans as it would be logical as when the government contracts are fulfilled ATK sells bulk 5.56 on the open market and when 6.8 contracts are fulfilled since the plant has retooled for 6.8 they will be selling it on the market. Winchester will be doing the same. 5.56 ammo may be more scarce at some point and there is no doubt in my mind someone looked at this as a means of control of the masses with less or more expensive ammo as many will never change over to the 6.8. My uppers have been built for a couple years now.

Re: New army round
Any new development is going to be a completely new type of ammunition, likely cased telescopic. The 6.8 SPC is dead in the water and doesn't offer advantages that are significant enough for such a large entity as the US military to adopt that over legacy systems. 5.56mm ammunition, weapons, and support are firmly rooted and will require a massive technological shift to dislodge (or mind-boggling political ineptitude).

I don't think this is a for sure thing. They have been toying with the 6.8 for some time. Now with new ammunition, i.e. 6.5 calibers (grendel) and Valkyrie, who knows which way they may turn, or if at all? I would incure huge costs to refit an entire army....
