Custom AR Grips

#1

Post by Jksolomo »

I've been working on a process using clay and 3d printing to create pistol grips that are perfectly formed to someone's hand. The steps are as follows
1) make a grip out of modeling clay
2) squeeze the daylights out of it so that your fingers squish in and it forms to your hand
3) touch it up filling in the cracks and giving it the proper shape
4) scan it using a photogrammetry app
5) use modeling software to smooth out bumps and then merge the grip part with the mounting geometry from a normal grip
6) 3d print a grip using ABS or PLA
7) coat in plasti dip or bed liner to give it some added grippiness
Obviously having a gun that only fits one of your hands is not meant for the tacticool bros out there but it makes a fun gun even more comfortable to shoot.

Why? Seems like a solution in search of a problem. A cool use of 3D printing tech, though.

If he decides to start a business, that would be a good name!

This type of grip idea has been tried several times over the past decade...I can recall at least 4 different booths at SHOT over the years that tried exactly this type of product idea. Mainly, using the same type of polymer tech that Decibullz ear plugs use...heat in hot water and mold. None of those companies are in business. There are simply too many great AR grip options that fit 99.9999% of user hands.

This indeed was a solution in search of a problem. I was looking for something to test out some new technology on. I agree with the comment on how most grips fit 99% of people's hands. It's just cool to have one where your hand slides in perfectly. I'm actually working on a Glock 19 lower that uses the same concept but it's a little trickier to get right.

ARFCOM boys will eat those up, especially if you charge $150 bucks or more
