“There should have been blanks in the gun, the on-set armorer’s job is to check that before handing the weapon over,” Mike Tristan, 60, a Hollywood armorer with three decades of experience, said.

“They then make sure that the actor stands on a mark and never points the gun at the crew or cast… the editing makes it seem like they were pointing at their co-actor,” he said.

‘That’s why everyone in the industry is very confused,” he said. “How this happened is a total mystery at the moment.”
How it happened is that Alec pointed the gun at the crew. There may have been other breakdowns with the safety protocols on set, but he knew better.

As information leaks out,...its looking very bad for Mr. Baldwin. As producer and partly funding the film himself, certain liabilities attach to him beyond being the trigger-puller. He is likely not insured enough, and this will likely ruin him forever.

In the midst of a looming Hollywood union strike, the RUST production was operating on a shoestring budget and with very few union members. Union camera staff walked off the set just 6 hours before the accident. The weaponmaster was also local and not union.

From an update:

Safety protocols standard in the industry, including gun inspections, were not strictly followed on the “Rust” set near Santa Fe, the sources said. They said at least one of the camera operators complained last weekend to production managers about gun safety on the set.

Three crew members who were present at the Bonanza Creek Ranch set that day said they were particularly concerned about two accidental prop gun discharges on Saturday.

Baldwin’s stunt-double accidentally fired two rounds Saturday after being told that the gun was “cold” — lingo for a weapon that doesn’t have any ammunition, including blanks, one of crew members who witnessed the episode told the Los Angeles Times.

“There should have been an investigation into what happened,” said the crew member. “There were no safety meetings. There was no assurance that it wouldn’t happen again. All they wanted to do was rush, rush, rush.”

A colleague was so alarmed by the prop gun misfires he sent a text message to the unit production manager. “We’ve now had 3 accidental discharges. This is super unsafe.”
