Fair Pricing on Firearms

#1

Post by Bigfoot »

What is a good source to find fair market value for firearms?

My aunt is willing to sell me a Marlin 336RC in 30-30. I want to give her a fair price, but have no idea how much it is worth.

Sold examples on Gunbroker perhaps? If it has a "JM" mark on the barrel it's worth more than if it did not.

Gun broker. What they sell for not what people are asking. Bookmark a couple of auctions and come after they are over to see what they went for.

Look at gunbroker in the completed auctions.
Then you can see what they actually sold for.
What people ask and what they actually sell for are two different ball games.

When I looked at the completed auctions , they were selling from the low $400's to over $800.
Most of them were between $600-$800.

I use Gunbroker as a tool when pricing out guns, but sometimes things go higher on there than anywhere else. I would try to triangulate the price from a few different sites.

The value will depend on some specifics. As Racewin mentioned, does it have the "JM" mark? What condition is it in? Has it been refinished? It might help to have the serial number to search for the year it was made.

That's a little outdated. The Marlin 336 market has gone up a ton since any of this was written.

Agreed-Gunbroker, do an “Advanced Search” on “completed” transactions. I wouldn’t bother with those “Gun Values” books. There’s a reason gun stores use them: they almost always cite low ball values which don’t reflect the current worth of the firearm.
The WORST way to determine the value of a gun is to take it to gun shop and ask the guy behind the counter who has a double chin, a predatory gleam in his eye, and a large dorsal fin sticking up outa his back.

The Blue Book of Gun Values is a good book to have.
It has lots of very good good information about guns and is worth the money to have one just for that.
As far as their prices go though , they don't seem to work in the real world.
