01 FFL's, shipping handguns through PO?

#1

Post by rbking »

First time in years. Going to sell some handguns on the auctions.

Checked with some of the local 01 FFL's. About having them ship the pistols. They informed me, that the PO changed their regs last year. They can't send handguns through the mail! Have to use either UPS or FedEx. Can anybody substantiate this? Any 01 FFL's input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, for the rapid response! Years back, when I lived in Phoenix. I use to ship by FedEX.

Because of the astronomical shipping and insurance rates for "overnight". Started shipping through dealers. Priority mali was dirt cheap, as compared to FedEx. Looks like the bidders on my auctions, are just going to have to deal with being hosed by FedEx.

Yep, just need for the dealer to fill out a PS Form 1508.

I also have used shipmygun.com. I would again. Even easier than finding a dealer to ship for you. Just go through their website and print the label and drop it off.

No offense! But this got me confused? If I have a winner for one of my pistols on the auction. And his 01 FFL will only accept it transferred from another 01 FFL. How does shipmygun.com handle this? Are they 01 FFL's?

Shipmygun.com is owned by Buds Gun Shop. Basically, you are just using their FedEx account to create a shipping label, so you get a massive discount on the shipping cost...instead of paying the much inflated consumer rates you would if you used UPS Store, etc.

If the gun shop you are intending to ship the gun to will not receive a firearm from a non-FFL, they are either ignorant of the ATF regulations or they just want to be difficult. Any FFL can accept a firearm from an individual....all that is required is to record the information of the person from whom the gun was received...full name and address *sometimes they want a copy of your DL.

Of course, you can bring the gun to a local gun shop/FFL and have them ship it...but you are just adding an unnecessary extra step.

That is only true for non-licensees. :handgestures-thumbup:

They are mistaken. An 01 can ship handguns via USPS.

^^^ This.

Though, as the OP mentioned: If you are a non-licensee, it can be cheaper to ship a handgun via FLL, as they are able to ship USPS which is usually a LOT cheaper than expedited FedEx / UPS. Just depends on what the outbound FFL wants to charge for their trouble.
