The movie on how to reverse engineer an STG44 and claim you invented it? Never taken an STG apart, but maybe someone that has can verify.

Yes they got the idea from the Germans, but a lot of the engineering had to do with adapting it to the changing Russian manufacturing methods. i.e. milled and stamped receivers.

He did not reverse engineer an STG 44. From that he copied just the ergonomics/overall layout.
You could use the word reverse engineer for the Garand action though. He copied that action and placed it upside down in his design. He is even on record admitting that was his key inspiration in coming up with his design.

Saw this movie, it was decent.
