The financial part of this is that you can buy a 10/22 for cheaper than a Henry lever, and if we are talking new, practically the same as a single shot. My complaint about the cricket is the bolt has to manually be pulled back and it takes quite a bit of strength on a kids part. Each of my kids got different rifles but really it is teaching how to use sights, and mostly be safe. Have fun!

Bolt action .22LR. The Savage Rascal is amazing! Reasonably priced, great trigger, and many colors to choose from.
It's also worth mentioning that it is very light!

I’m about to buy my niece a rifle, she is 6 1/2 now, but I’m planning for her 7th birthday. Savage Rascal Minimalist…because it has a threaded barrel without the extra weight of the bull barrel model. The Rascal is better than the Chipmunk or Cricket because the bolt is cock on open, and it’s pretty light. Unless you want to be pulling that plunger lever back each shot, that is.
Buy once cry once choice is the CZ 457 Scout. Threaded barrel, iron sights, single shot magazine with the ability to grow up and use 5/10/25rd mags. It also fits in any CZ 457 stock, so you can upgrade to a full size stock a few years from now. If you go this route, buy an adult sized stock now, since who know what will be available 5 years from now.

I saw this in Phoenix at Strapt Armory. IF my guy were coming-up, this would be dope!

I was given an older Marlin 22 bolt-action for my first gun. No magazine, so I had to load every round by hand for a time and had to earned the magazine by being responsible, safe, and accurate. Helped me retain what I was taught.
Pic is close to the same model I had.

Re: Best first rifle for children
I started out with a Remington 512 ScoreMaster 5-shot bolt-action. A year later, for my 8th birthday, Dad got me an AR7 survival rifle. It looked right out of Star Wars at the time (1976). But I have to be honest and admit, I wasn't quite ready for it. I think that rifle is responsible for turning me into the firepower freak I am today. When Ramline came out with 25 round mags for it, I was a terror, and was trying to figure out a way to alter it into a full-auto.
