Drama at Ben Avery 3/16/25?

Ambulances and police cars came flying by, headed west toward the practical pistol and shotgun ranges. Anybody know what all the excitement was about?

Newish shooter, holstering between strings of fire at the Steel Challenge match, failed to engage the safety AND had his finger on the trigger when holstering. Gun fired, round hit his pocket knife and splattered his leg and the RO's shoe. EMS on site took care of everything. Phoenix and Daisy Mountain arrived about an hour after everything was resolved. BASF personnel and Sheriff's deputy took notes. Issue resolved, no major drama.

Second "incident" in the 50 years we've been incorporated. Both were trigger related. This one and a trigger shoe on a shoulder holster, years ago. No major injuries. Not bad for a couple of billion rounds down range!

FWIW, I was standing behind a shooter on the line at Ben Avery who holstered a Glock while his shirttail was intruding into the holster. The fabric pulled the trigger. The guy had an Emerson OTF clipped to his pocket. The bullet took the clip off the knife, which fell into his pocket. The bullet hit the dirt and left a divot just to the side of the shooter's foot. No injuries, just a damaged knife, and some elevated respiration, heart rate, and blood pressure.

I've seen many NDs at Ben Avery. What I have not seen is injuries. Maybe what he meant to say was only 2 NDs resulting in injury. If true, that would be pretty remarkable.

If you spend enough time around guns, its not a matter if, but when.

But as long as the cardinal rules of gun safety are observed,...injury is unlikely.

Probably when they called 911 they reported "someone's been shot" and that activated the police response. That's why it's important to call it in as a "training incident" so you're not waiting for MCSO to clear the scene so the medics can move in.

Absolutely.

One of the first things they teach RSOs at a different range is to say "someone was injured in an accident". Do not say someone was shot unless it is actually a shooting incident, for exactly the reason Carlos stated. Police will roll automatically, sometimes showing up expecting gunplay.

Feb 2024 I personally know a competitive shooter that had a Glock sear issue and took a couple rounds though his hand. Not all incidents become public.
