Man, there is something wrong with people, and it's becoming pervasive. The fact they're using guns indiscriminately these days is shocking. We have a mental health problem in this nation, and it's not getting better.

There is absolutely something wrong with people - there has always been something wrong with people - but it's only in the last little bit that our society has decided to celebrate what is wrong with people instead of confronting it as wrong.kenpoprofessor wrote: ↑May 19th, 2023, 2:11 am Man, there is something wrong with people, and it's becoming pervasive. * We've spent the last 100 years or so attacking the idea that there is objective truth and objective morality - replacing these ideas with "personal truth" and "personal morality" in which the individual decides what is true and good "for them" as opposed to adopting an understanding of truth and goodness based on an unwavering standard.
* We've spent the last 50 years telling people that human life is not special or different or worth protecting
* We've spent the last 20 years glorifying and justifying random acts of violence in our entertainment
* We've spent the last 3-4 years watching political factions in our country fuel division with increasingly violent language.
* We've spent the last 1-2 years actively promoting mental illness and deviancy as virtuous.
We should not be surprised... A few years ago I read a book by George Barna (a Christian apologist and sociologist) in which he compared cultural views of evil across generations. I don't have the book with me, but I remember one of the key points was that in late 19th century America there were "bad men" just like there are today - but in that time the bad man acknowledged that he was bad - that he was damned... in the late 20th and early 21st centuries this attitude changed - such that those same "bad men" would look at their actions and say that there is nothing wrong with them - they were just doing what they needed to do to get by. Our culture has created this mindset... In today's America, good and evil are no longer absolute - they are arbitrary and defined by the individual... I'd make a healthy bet that the Nashville shooter's manifesto suggests that she believed that she was doing something good and necessary - she'd been told that those who don't accept her sexuality / gender ideology were evil, and when she combined this with her humanist worldview she justified killing those people because they did not support her view of gender and sexuality.
My 2 cents...
