Off-Duty Oakdale Police Officer Accidentally Shoots Self With Own Gun

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — An off-duty Oakdale police officer is expected to make a full recovery after accidentally shooting himself with his firearm, authorities said Wednesday.

The Oakdale Police Department said it happened at around 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento. The department said the officer was at the hospital visiting family.

According to Oakdale police, the officer was handling his weapon when it was accidentally discharged. It is unclear why the officer was handling his firearm.

The officer has already undergone surgery for the gunshot wound.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

The Sacramento Police Department conducted the initial investigation and deemed it an accident. The Oakdale Police Department is conducting its own internal investigation.

Many years ago I was looking at a CZ 38 at a dealer's shop. He was pointing the pistol at me while showing it to me. I pushed the pistol aside. He said don't worry it's not loaded as I moved the pistol away from me it went off and missed me by inches. Very scary almost caped my pants.

When I was on the job, we had an instructor, head of our shooting team, accidently drill a hole in a door leading to the city council chambers.

A sergeant, fingering a dash mounted shotgun, out of boredom, while riding on patrol, blow the windshield out of a patrol vehicle, not bad enough but it hit the leading edge of the roof to do body damage. Yeah, the patrolman driving had to change his pants and couldn't hear for2 hours, I wrote the report, and I could tell he was doing as much lip reading as hearing.

There are more but, only professional cops should have guns then everybody will be safe.

I was surprised to see some honesty in the wording. They didn't claim the gun acted on its own this time.

They did use passive voice, however, instead of saying "HE fired the gun." The gun was "accidentally discharged?" Really? By whom? Reporters and politicians know how to use passive when they want to deflect attention. How often have you heard "Mistakes were made"? Sounds better than "I made a mistake."

Middle school student steals gun accidentally left in school bathroom by security officer, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A school security officer’s handgun is now missing after Memphis police say a middle school student walked off the property with it after finding it in the bathroom.

Police say the incident took place Tuesday morning at Kirby Middle School.

The security officer told police that around 10:50 a.m., she accidentally left her handgun in a stall in a girl’s restroom. She said she did not realize her gun was missing until over an hour later.

School staff reviewed surveillance footage, which showed a student enter the bathroom at 10:59 a.m. Police say she appeared to be concealing something underneath her hoodie when she exited.
