Yes, I number my mags for that very reason.

Always have and always will. Great for many reasons, also have an ID to keep track of my mags when training or in classes.

Yes, all mags are numbered with a paint pen in 2 places and when at the range mag # is noted on day's data sheet.
A list is in excel and notes are made as issues arise.
For XD mags, a color stripe is painted around the basepad with the # on the back, red=9mm, blue=45, green=40

Never had a need to number them. If a magazine gave me a problem, it was immediately set aside and segregated from the rest of the herd until repaired or removed from service. Not numbering them also forces me to keep better track of them at all times.

If I understand the OP'spoint correctly?
When I was much younger, I cut my teeth on cheap surplus 1911's.
One time, I got some WAR TIME loaded mags with a pistol purchase. For giggles, I slapped them into a 1911 that had more wiggle in its slide to frame fit, than my steady girl at the time.
All shot without a hiccup.
Ever since then, I have never bothered worrying about loaded, or unloaded mags. I load them up, they sit until I shoot them. Then I load them up again and they sit until the next range day. I have some loaded mags that have sat in the safe for years because I don't have a need to do extensive target practice.
In the past half century, they have always gone bang when I eventually get around to using them.

I use paint marker on my mags.

Yes, mainly to keep track of any repetitive issues. They do happen, even with Glock mags
...the last one I removed for issues was a Glock 33 rounder.

I do this also. No numbering for me.

That goes the same for me.
It wouldn't occur with other magazines. Or if it did, further inspection on the ammo/gun.schiffer99 wrote: ↑August 21st, 2018, 9:00 pm How do you know the mag was the issue? Point of edification, not saying wrong by any means.

Obvious deformities of the feed lips or follower leading to feeding troubles, and, while not definitive, a bolt-over-base malfunction is a good indication of a magazine problem, which might be resolved with cleaning, or it might need a new mag spring.schiffer99 wrote: ↑August 21st, 2018, 9:00 pm How do you know the mag was the issue? Yes, I number all of mine.
For identifying problem mags, loading with different ammo, and keeping track of them while shooting with other people with the same platform.
If you’ve ever done training with a buddy running the same type of gun, and you’re both dropping mags on the ground, then you know what I mean.
