Military surplus: any countries to avoid?

Discuss being prepared for contingencies and emergencies. Oh yeah, and the coming Zombie Apocalypse, of course!

Military surplus: any countries to avoid?

#1

Post by MarkItZero »

I have some experience buying surplus items from the US, Eastern & Western Europe and Israel and all found them to be of good quality and good bargains.

However a lot more of the surplus stuff popping up on sites right now is from places like Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Egypt and China. I'm a little leery of some of this stuff. Anyone know anything about it or it's quality?

Depends what, exactly, the item(s) in question is/are.

I've had the chance to shoot Chinese and Egyptian AKs and they both ran without a hitch. As for uniform/cloth type gear, no idea.

Some of that Colombian kit is US kit. I'll find a picture and post it here; last time I was in BOG they had an honor guard out in front of one of the government buildings. Nicely stenciled "US" on some of the pouches.

things from humid jungle conflicts tend to be a little rougher. but as far as rifles, or carbines (like mausers)....most are made from tooling from the better countries, (germany) or by the other countries under contract. really depends on what you are asking about.

It all depends on what items you are considering.

I bought Chinese stuff right from China and it was well made for what it was (canvas chest rig and some pouches).
