Easy friction fire
I’ve been teaching my grandkids while on camping trips, to make a campfire using ferrous rods. I made each of them a little fire kit. Each has a nice ferrous rod, various types of tinder, etc.
I came across this method of fire starting, so I made a little video for the grandkids.
Thought I’d share with you all.
Sorry for the three clips, Imgur wouldn’t accept whole video.

Re: Easy friction fire
Even easier pour antifreeze on it and save the friction effort.

Or use matches.
Or a Bic lighter.

Yes they can use lighters and matches.
The idea is to teach them to start a fire other ways, for in a survival situation.
I also teach them how to find good tinder in the woods.

Re: Easy friction fire
Thanks I thought so. The Potasium permaganate is a dietary supplement. Just throw a jar of this and sugar cubes in the camper. And a small container of both in my day pack.

Re: Easy friction fire
Potassium Permanganate reacts with Glycerin or Glycol and starts on fire. Antifreeze has a very high Glycol concentration. The forest service actually buys ping pong balls filled with Potassium Permanganate and then they have a launcher that injects antifreeze before launching them usually from helicopter for doing controlled burns. The ping pong balls burst in to flame about 20 seconds after being injected.

Re: Easy friction fire
O and another fun fact, real ping pong balls are made from nitrocellulose, a close cousin of modern smokeless gun powder. The are very flammable and leave nearly no ash behind. Unfortunately some modern ping pong balls are moving towards being made from a plastic and unfortunately are not as fun.

I tested, it works great! I’ll make another video when it’s not too sunny.

Re: Easy friction fire
Have you shown them the 9 volt battery and steel wool method?
Or mountain man style with flint, steel and a piece of char cloth?
Magnifying glass is my kids' favorite.
