He was convicted of selling the shooter ammo. How did he know the guy was a nut? There's no requirement to screen ammo buyers either through a business or private sales. Of what was he convicted?
Do we have a liability on this site selling ammo?

Typically, that kind of violation goes nowhere. But because of the publicity of the event,...he was always going to get hammered. SOMEBODY has to go to jail.

I thought what did him in was loading up some AP rounds (black tip) and selling them.
I may be wrong but It's supposed to be a big no-no, can someone clarify?

It is,...but as I said, such violations are so low level (even for ATF) that usually they just flip the person and make them work as a snitch and set up bigger cases. Prosecution of what they hammered him for almost never happens. The call to rake him over the coals came down from on high. No doubt about it.

He was convicted of manufacturing ammo without a license. You must have a federal ammunition manufacturer's license to manufacture ammo in the US. If he had just sold the components he would have been fine. If he had assembled the ammunition out of components supplied by the buyer, he would have been legal as well. But, he manufactured the ammo and sold it in interstate commerce and that requires a federal ammunition manufacturer's license. It had nothing to do with the AP rounds.

You can own all the AP you want, just can't sell it.
