I just recently bought an AR from a friend's wife that had died. I was told by another friend that this rifle had been shot. But the rifle has a grease or some kind of sticky stuff in and around the bolt and chamber area. I was thinking about using Brakefree spray on it. Are there any other suggestions that I could use?

Boretech makes a good copper remover

I'm a fan of BreakFree CLP - mostly just habit probably - but is has always served me well. I'm sure that motor oil will provide lubrication and I'd use it if I didn't have other stuff - but I like the idea of an oil that has carbon loosening solvents in it.

If it's got a TON of grease on it and your normal cleaning process with Breakfree is not getting it done (or getting it done fast enough) - I'd have no issue using NON-chlorinated brake cleaner to get the cosmoline off of it - but if you do this be sure it is NON chlorinated. Not sure whether you could get it hot enough fast enough to get the chlorinated stuff to produce phosgene - but you don't want to find out.

Just my 2 cents.

I ended up using/soaking parts in CLP breakfree. for a couple hours. Then wiping everything down. The worst of the job was the front sight. The post wouldn't move using a bullet or turning piece. It finally broke free and I will see how it shoots next. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

This WD-40 product is great and cheaper than Gun scrubber. I use it on just about everything now, safe for plastics as well, GS leaves like chalking on my plastic guns WD does not. Just flush, dry and wipe down with oil.

I'll have to give that a try, have a Mosin M44 I've never shot because it's still covered in cosmoline.

I just run mine through the dishwasher for a couple cycles.

I am a fan of the Lucas brand cleaning/care products. They seem to do what I need them to and they aren't expensive. I always laugh at the marketing for the high dollar stuff - like it is some sort of black magic voodoo rocket science to clean and lube a pretty simple mechanical device.
