What gives with the fluted barrels? Is there some advantage or is it just for the cool factor ?

Less weight.

Less weight AND more surface area for air-cooling. Personally, I have chosen straight fluted barrels for all my builds for the last 20 years.

Now,...the different STYLES of fluting,...yes, that's where it just gets silly for purposes of style and tacticool.

Also more rigid and dissipates heat better.. and cool also :D

Less weight ... yes
More surface area for cooling .... yes
More rigid.... NO
Mechanically impossible to remove material and be more rigid... engineering 101.

Now ... it IS more rigid than a barrel having the same root diameter at the bottom of the flutes... but it is also heavier than the smaller diameter barrel now because “fins” have been “added”.... again... engineering 101.

Math don’t lie😂

Sorry, I guess I shoulda added of the same weight

PS: and of the same material :D
