Skateboard helmet?

This is the place to discuss shooting-related gear: LBV's, Tac, BDU's, etc...

Good idea? If so, what to look for?

I'm planning on not getting my melon busted with a brick, frozen water bottle or a cane, if for some reason (NOT of my choosing), I have to pass through hostile territory.

I'll just paint the letters "BLM" on it, so everybody thinks I work for the Bureau of Land Management.

Geez brother I thought you were taking up skateboarding!

Hey don't laugh .. the wife and I only gave up our long boards a couple years back. We boarded regularly.

Been thinking about getting another but ... falling hurts!

Jokes aside. Skate/bike helmets are probably the thinnest, lightest, and coolest (temp wise) you can get....just short of a simple bump cap. Snowboard type helmets are typically a bit more insulated.

Some skate/bike helmets even have an optional small chin bar.

Buy a Bounce Hat or bump cap. They're padded baseball caps used by paintballers. You'll stand out far less.

My old job had us put plastic insert into our caps. If you sweat it will start dripping from cap. I hated them. The only thing they help with is not getting a open wound, if you get smacked hard enough you will pass out.

How about a construction hardhat- you will look a bit redneck to the college crowd though...

eta... just like anything else, it depends on what your goal is (besides keeping your eggshell from cracking). A lot of the 'hobby' helmets (horse, bike, even some skateboard) are designed to take a fall one or a few times before they crack and need replaced. They are basically styrafoam with a thin plastic shell. Some would like you to replace them yearly to keep the cash flow coming so their materials may fade and deteriorate in the sun. Of course they make better quality for just a little more $$... Can they take a baseball bat swung at crowd force?

I'm not sure if the air-soft bump helmets are in this group or not since they are patterned after military gear. Some are probably better than others and this is likely where you may end up.

Then there are the work/industrial products that are designed to protect you on the job for extended periods- these will last years but are pretty basic and functional looking - not much designer gear here...
Motorcycle helmets will offer a lot of impact protection and some designer options too. They are ubiquitous across the country so won't scream militant when downtown...

Then there is the military stuff- from simple head pads to ballistic protection.
If you need to mount lights or NVG then these options are readily available for this style while not so much on most of the others.

So yes a skate board bump helmet is a good idea and reasonable inexpensive choice but will it fit you needs or are you gonna have to modify it at additional cost? Will it handle your worst case scenario (and stay on)?

For boogaloo boiz, don't let fashi0n supersede safety, get a skate helmet and some stencils and do a Hawaiian pattern on it. Pro Tec makes very nice helmets.
