Colt Defender, .45. Thinking about a Springfield XDE in 9mm because of lighter recoil.

I would think a big guy could conceal a Defender or other 3" 1911 easily.

Nope not wrong. I used to be 350 lbs and could hide an AR pistol easily, LOL. At 225 ish I can still easily ccw a G 17 or full size 1911. I carry the G17 often. This said a shield or small revolver is much easier.

Carrying concealed is a commitment not an exercise in clothing accessories. You dress from the beginning with the intention to carry a weapon not throw on a IWB on your way out the door. It requires a proper Holster belt and clothing sizes along with clothing types colors and styles. Certain colors and fabric types hide any unintended bulges better than others. XLT shirts are always required as is a size larger.

I have a Colt and Rock Island 3.5" officers size 45 that i carry on occasion.
I prefer the Rock Island over the colt.
When I was starting out I carried a Rock Island 5" 38super.

Now it's usually a SIG p239 in 357 sig and the 45s when I want to change it up.

Wait. Are you saying there are people who don't carry 1911s? :o

Don't worry. They're still Browning style recoil actuated tilting barrel handguns.

;)

Due to work I cannot carry on-body daily, when I can carry on-body S&W Performance Center 1911, bobtail commander .45 in Mitch Rosen leather.

As a Glock guy, I recently switched from the G19 to the G48. Now I carry a slim gun with a “limited” capacity. It is only a matter of time before I rotate back to a 1911. I actually prefer to carry a heavier gun, but I don’t like the bulk of a double stack. When I sold my last 1911, I decided that if I ever bought another one, it would be special. Nighthawk, Wilson, etc. I got a CMP 1911 this year...maybe that will be the one.

I just sold my sr1911 and I am sad. That gun was accurate as hell and comfortable to shoot. Alas, needs must.

I know what you mean. I have been trying to carry my Colt Defender and have tried a multitude of holsters. I have a very stiff VersaCarry water buffalo skin gunbelt and that sucker is STIFF. However, I have tried a paddle holster and a regular OWB holster and the only holster that works for my Defender is a Galco IWB holster with a belt clip. You would think my being large would make the gun easier to conceal, but you have to factor in the Fat Roll Phenomenon or FRP. The FRP causes just about any gun carried OWB to "roll away" from your belt and flop around, sticking out like a sore thumb. I know some of you will opine "lose weight" but at 65 years of age, I'm kinda stuck in my ways.

A good holster and belt make carrying a 1911 effortless for me. Kramer makes some great holsters, just ordered another one last week when they went on sale.

Either a government model or my glock, depending on which alien holster I grab in the morning while still sleepy.
