Kind of a dumb question but as a newbe to red dots I got to ask.

How far away from the eye do you prefer to mount them ?
No magnifier or anything else being mounted.

I've got them mounted in various positions on different guns.
On one hand you want to be able to quickly see the dot and the target so which is better for you ... close-up or further down the barrel?

Also remember if you move it, you will have to re-sight it in so decide if you will be mounting a PVS-14 or other optic between your eye and the dot- leave enough room for everything... you could end up with (dbal-dot-2x-pvs14)...you probably won't have all that on there at once (maybe) but the position and space have to be reserved if you think that is the gear you need at the time.

With red dots think about a couple things when setting your spacing.

There is no eye relief restriction
You can shoot easily with two eyes open so try it when mounting the red dot.
Leave room behind for a flip up Backup iron sight, batteries die.
Leave room on the rail for a flip up or flip aside magnifier, if you decide

At the front of the upper, near the barrel. Not on the handguard.

This is how i mount red dots on all of my on my AR's. So far seems to be a good rule of thumb although not a hard fast one. Once you get used to the 2 eyes open thing its very easy to pick up and intuitive. Takes some practice to get used to for some more than others.

Thanks to all . I'm going to give it a go as far away on the receiver rail as I can get it.
