Of course anyone will use what they have available, except blanks of course...

Most of the ammo buyers get the cheapest available for quantity and maybe a few boxes of the high priced 'effective/accurate/specialty' rounds to keep on hand for 'just in case'. Most of the supply will be commercial ball or surplus.

For reloaders it is a little different, we have additional options...
We can buy those special Gold Dot, or OTM bullets and craft our own to find the best load for our needs... then load up a whole bunch of them, for current practice and later needs... a whole lot cheaper than buying the OEM version. We really don't save any money, probably spend a lot more, but also shoot more...

All my mags of 223 are filled with Hornady 55gr Soft Point over H335. All of my mags of 300 BLK are filled with Nosler 110gr Varmagedden over H110.

I do have more accurate and longer range ammo loaded for these two rifles but none in mags presently.

When it comes to SHTF you shoot anything you have.
As long as you're making noise , you are still in the fight.

Friend of mine showed up at the range a couple months ago with his 5.56 rifle and his .300 magazines and ammo. I loaned him some of mine.

As accordion virtuoso and love goddess Judy Tenuta says, "It could happen."
