Why do some cases have small primers and others have large primers?

The answer is thinking outside the box. American and NATO countries always made .45acp ammo with large primers because that's how it had always been done. Nothing to rethink.

But when the Yugoslavs came out from behind the iron curtain and started cranking out .45 ammo,...there were no western engineers to tell them the sacrosanct holy inspired genius of its creation,...so they didn't understand the blasphemy they committed when they decided that large primers were not necessary for such a small case capacity. And thus, the first ever small primer .45 ammo came into the U.S. under the HANSEN brand, which was the modern day PPU we get today. S&B soon followed suit. And then when Winchester started farming out some component manufacturing to the former combloc because everything was cheaper, thats when we started getting the small primer Winchester cases.

So yeah,...its a commie plot.

I would suspect it was partly due to the non toxic loaded ammo, rather then making a large "non toxic" primer, just change the primer pocket size and move on. All of the Winchester small primer brass I have found have all been marked WIN NT. I switched over to small primer 4-5 years ago and never looked back. I don't have to worry about mixing it with my shooting groups brass, next shooting session I will get back any of the brass they scooped up on accident.

From what I've read in the past, the companies that went to small primer did so because non toxic primers only come in the small size so they went that way.

Definitely a PIA for those of us reloading on progressive presses. The only thing saving me is having a high quality case sorter available at all times.

It sucks when you are cruising along and then the primer wont seat. Slows the process. Now I have to check any range pick ups before I start.

Exactly! I just reloaded 1000 .45ACP with large primers. I probably tried to stuff a large primer into a small primer case at least a dozen times.

uh sorting cases after cleaning, only takes a few minutes, saves time and misery from broken primer pin, or stuck case, or something worse, and well in reality even after sorting one still creeps thru, not sure how that happens, but it does.

Yup, hand processing, one stage at a time, does have its advantages, imo! Which is probably why I never graduated to a progressive. Once I learned how every stage of processing towards a finished bullet can compound a negative,... I just stayed with one step at a time,... but, my OCD may have a factor in all that!

The amount of time I take to make bullets would probably drive most loaders crazy!!! If I don't check EVERY primer depth, with my finger, if I don't check EVERY case mouth expansion with my fingers, if I don't trickle each and EVERY powder charge, if I don't crimp with my customized single stage, with torque wrench attachment, and then twist my EVERY case 180 degrees for a second balancing crimp, if I don't check my seating depth EVERY four or five cases,.... well,... I'm sure my point is made,...

Like I said,... watching me would drive most loaders crazy!!!

You don't inspect after cleaning and cull bad cases before continuing on?

I do, but "checking primer pocket size" is not one of my inspection criteria. LOL

well checking primer pockets wasn't one of mine either until it became an issue, so now i go thru the process, nothing more frustrating than being on a roll and have a fubared primer issue
