30-06 loads

#1

Post by NBC_LT »

Had some fun on the range a few weeks back with the Garand. All loads listed here functioned. No FTF or FTE. Groups were best when loads were hottest. Liked the feel of 4064. The other ball powders all felt a bit "hot" - even at the low charges.

Dang, that is quite the selection!!
I need to work up some loads for my 06 bolt gun and haven't selected a powder yet. Been leaning towards the 4064. So the garand seemed to like the 4064? I've found that 4064 seems to be liked by a fair amount of other 06 users as well.

Too many powders to choose from.

The concern with Garand loads is that you not over gas it and bend the Op Rod. It may tell tale this by showing an ejector dent on the rim of the case.
I've always stuck to the load given to me in 1983 by the late great John Martin:
45gr IMR 4895 under 168gr BTHP

+1 ^^^ One cannot go wrong with the old standby 4895. But 4064 was also used in the production 30-06 by the military for use in Garand's. Its a little bit slower than 4895 but still produces reasonable velocities.

4831 or 4530 are my two preferences. I use 4831 behind some Nosler 165 gr Solid Base, I still have a good store of them, and I can keep them around 3/4" groups. This is definitely not for a Garand, bolt guns only.

I have had good luck with IMR 4350 with 175 SMK at 1,000 yards, with my Rem 700 LR. It has a 26'' barrel.
