I just got hold of some Federal Smal magnum Pistol primers. Can they be used for 9mm without any problems or what should I look to change in the recipe?
Thanks,
Thom

My experience has been back off the charge weight by 5% and you'll likely be OK. If your powder charge weight is 4.0 grains, for instance, back it off to 3.8 and see if you get similar results as you would with standard primers and 4.0 grains.

There is no likely be alright about it. They will be fine and you will not have any problems with them at all. Same with standard small rifle primers. The small primers are the same damn cup for both rifle and pistol and they contain the same charge so there is no real difference in pressures. Most I have seen in a pressure spike between primers is a couple hundred psi which means there is no real difference between a 9mm at 38,000psi or 38,200psi. I run same powder charge regardless of primer used.
