Corrosive ammo, lets beat it to death again.

Yea this topic again. With the ammo mess that is currently at hand, I picked up some .308 S&B that is rumored to be corrosive. Since the days of $79 Mosins, We have been running corrosive without fear. Windex or ammonia has always worked just fine for us. For giggles, I picked up a gallon of Balistol and the suggested mix is about 1/9. Anyone else use this stuff? Apparently the Germans us it for literally everything including corrosive ammo.

having shot a lot of black powder, i generally did the same for black powder and corrosive, soap and hot water, ammonia, never used ballestrol, but heard good things, good luck with it, i always took windex with me for the quick fix as i'd sometimes forget to clean right away it slowed the crapola down considerably

I've been using Ballistol for years. I use it full strength for cleaning and wiping down stocks. Dilute it for spraying down the barrel after shooting corrosive ammo.

Recently picked up my first can of Ballistol.

One helluva funky smelling thing. Not horrible, but it's not pleasant either.

Never used anything fancy. Took a spray bottle with diluted ammonia out to the desert to douse things before heading back. Big rinse in the garage sink upon arrival home, blow out with air, lubricate. Rather not have to do the drill but cheap ammo has it's related costs.

I've been told Windex is good for corrosive , not for the ammonia but for the water in it.
The corrosive in the ammo is a salt and ammonia does nothing to neutralize it , only water can flush it off.
Hot, soapy water the best followed by a good all over gun oil of your choice.
But Windex is convent for a FAST scrubbing till you can get too the real thing.

Why not just use a spray bottle of water and dish soap then?

Anything that has water will get the salt out.

That's the corrosive part.
The salt is in the primers.
It'll hold moisture against the barrel or bolt and keep moisture there till it rusts.

Almost the same with black powder. If you oil the ****outta the fouling it won't attract moisture since its full of oil.
Not ideal but it'll work for a while until you clean it later or in a day or so.

Yup good ole water works fine. Used a garden hose on my ‘74 for years. I shoot all kinds of old commie surplus. Never had a problem.

It’s the water.
