.22 Shorts and Pistol Suppressor

#1

Post by Pima Pants »

Is there any danger of baffle strikes when using .22 shorts in a suppressed .22 caliber pistol? I've been told not to use snake shot in a suppressed pistol, but I just got a smokin' deal on a case of.22 shorts and would like to shoot them in my suppressed Walther P22. Any bad experiences?

I wouldn't. Maybe try it once and inspect the baffles, the lead projectile out of a 22 short isn't going to do any damage to baffles, unless they are aluminum *maybe. Snake shot is a definite no go. A nice lead ring is going to build up in the chamber, though...which is going to cause trouble when you try to load 22LR.

Didn't know shorts would feed from the magazine of a P22? I have shot shorts through a suppressed rifle without issue.

Snake shot is not a good idea I did it once by accident and it didn't hurt anything... There should be zero danger of baffle strikes with 22 Shorts as long as they cycle in your action. I have even used 22lr CB's they are silly quiet but, they of course do very little down range.

I have a Smith and Wesson Victory with a 2.6 inch barrel it is very quiet with just about any ammo you put through it.

Shoot paper (without can) if there no key holing it's good to go.

Great responses; thanks, everybody. I know I would have to cycle the shorts by hand if I choose to use them, but it kind of seems like it's not worth the risk to my cheap aluminum can. I may just use the shorts in my Marlin 39 lever gun.

Thanks again for your knowledgeable responses.

I have a half dozen 22 cans and an equal number of host guns and I wouldn't hesitate a second shooting those in any of them.

Muzzle volocity in a most 22 shorts are pretty close to a standard velocity 22LR and faster than a lot of the subsonic 22LR scamom out there. So there is no reason other than feed issues that should keep you from shooting them.
