What’s a good budget shotgun for waterfowl

#1

Post by Shoot th3 moon »

I got a $500 budget for some shotguns 12 or 20 gauge. I’m interested in waterfowl and bird hunting. Any good options? I would like to find 2 in that price range.

2 for a total of 500?
I have the mossy 500, that has worked reasonably well. You could probably find a lightly used one for 250.

Just about every company out there sells a " budget " shotgun.
I personally would rather have a good used quality shotgun over a new " budget " shotgun.
Everyone has there favorites.
I like the Remington 870 for hunting.

I"m a over and under guy for most birds, so might be tough finding a decent OU for that, but they are out there.

I'd go semi auto, especially if you are gonna be in a lair blind, on your back, lotsa semis on market, stoeger makes a couple nice units, as does just about anyone else. chokes will be the biggy

best of luck

I had a Baikal O/U and although a bit heavy, it wan't all that bad for the price.
I've had Rem-Win and like them a lot. One thing I like more about Mossberg is the tang safety- With Rem/Win, they are similar but different and I always had to look to see which I had in my hand, the M is right there under the thumb and works quicker for me.

Here's a link to 10 shotguns under $500.00.

Like RJ, I'm an O/U guy for anything but HD, and there are a couple of Turkish O/Us that work pretty well, but check out this link in the meantime.

Remington 870 super magnum, usually fairly cheap at Walmart, will cover all your bases and be reliable as well as take 3.5" shells. With your budget you could also fit in cheaper semi autos like the Hatfield SAS, which gets shockingly good feedback from users. Save even more money with a 870 Express with 3" chamber, been killing birds for millions of people for decades.

A nice used Remington 1100 or 1187 wouldn't hurt the budget either, and they've built those for 50 years or something.

Just a few ideas.

I like the Benelli Super Nova. It's in your price range and I just works. I think they have a recoil reducer for it so if you are shooting a lot of heavy 3.5" you can save your shoulder.

It's in your price range at Cabela's so you can likely find even a better deal out there.

Mossberg sells a combo setup (18.5"/28" barrels) that would let you get two in your price range. Watch Big5 for a sale.

With that budget I would go Benelli Super Nova.

Unless I read it wrong the OP is looking to get two shotguns for his $500. Not going to do it with the Benelli.

OK, then I give up. 2 "waterfowl shotguns" for $500. I thought it was 2 ea that were in that price range.

In that case, I like the Remy 870 but I love the Benelli.

At that price point, I would stay away from most semi-autos. Especially don't touch any turkish made ones. I have watched one shear it's bolt in half after 200 rounds of 00 buck.

H&R makes some cheap shotguns that seem to function well, but feel cheap.

There is also Maverick.

The mossberg 500 goes on sale frequently, but I doubt you are going to get two for 500 after tax.

All other good deals involve hunting around for a good price on used shotguns.
