In my hands. The mossberg is clunky and swings like a 8'x4"x6".
My 870 is so much better in my hands.

Still bought a 500 with a 20" bbl for the house. Doesn't feel as substantial as my 870 but if 8 shells of 00 buck won't stop em. I can at least beat em with the 500 once at least.

Now my Miroku OU is sweet.

if 8 shells of 00 buck won't stop em you shouldn't have screwed with them in the first place.

Yeah. Probably right.

That's what the Brown Bess is for! A .75" lead ball and an instant smoke screen!

I’ve owned a few 870 shotguns in my life, still have 2. Dependable, easy takedown, and superb quality. However, I recently went to a Mossberg 590, and a Shockwave. I found the same reasons to like as with the Remingtons. I shoot off the left shoulder, and find the Mossbergs to be easier to operate.

870, now if you were comparing the 870 to the 590, then it gets to be a bit tougher.

I would take an older Wingmaster over any Mossberg.

I have both, and I think they're both excellent BUT I
give the edge to the 500 because it's lighter weight.

I carry a Maverick 20" 12 gauge (6+1 with a bird's
head grip and 14 round bandolier shoulder strap)
in my car trunk; it's a little bit "lower quality"
500 design, which is cheap ($200 new) but good.

Mossberg because I carried one in the Army and had to use it in many *ahem* "creative" ways and because I've broken three 870s in my career.

I favor the Mossberg for two reasons:

- Slide release and safety are in better spots (to me, anyway)
- No shell lifter in the way when loading
Never owned a Mossberg 500 - but I love my 590...

Both are very reliable and good shotguns for sure. I personally like the Mossberg because of the locations of the safety and slide release. You don't need to move your shooting hand for the slide release or the safety. The Mossberg is also lighter.

That being said the Remington's safety is easier to reach if it has a pistol grip stock (I have one on mine) and you won't have to move your shooting hand.

I have both if you want to try them out sometime.
