Remington 870

I was just in Cablela's today. I like to look in the "Library" sometimes.

Well, they had a rack of 15 to 20 "Remington 870 Police Magnums" for sale.

$900 each!!!!!

I'm no shotgun expert, but I bought a Remington 870 Express Magnum quite a few years ago for around $350ish.

Is there something special about an Express vs. Police or are they just insane?

I just saw a plain jain wingmaster listed for $850.

I couldn't believe it. I'm with you... I could have sworn they went 350 just a bit ago.

Bought mine when I was about 21. Never going to sell that gun

Are 870s being produced right now? If they're not, maybe that's what's driving the price?

The company as a whole got parsed out. Remington ammunition is up and running.

Don't know about guns though.

The Express is not even in the same class as the Wingmaster.
Remington went downhill when they came out with the Express.

Pretty much right on the money, I have had a few express guns, never paid more than $150 for one, the Wingmaster is by far in a different league, nice Wingmasters do command some good bucks. The express is still not a bad gun though.

IIRC, the Po-Po model retained the steel (or alloy) trigger guard and safety buttons that went plastic on the cheaper guns. Also, no key lock, I think.

So I looked it up and found this.

Full text of the post:
Not necessarily.
Remember, the 870 Express uses the same forged and milled receiver and heavy-duty internal parts as the Wingmaster and Police guns.

The only real difference is the Express isn't as well polished and deburred, and has a plastic trigger groups and MIM extractor.
The extractor can be replaced, although I've seldom seen a broken 870 extractor, and the plastic trigger group actually has some advantages.
It's also just as durable as the compressed, powdered aluminum trigger group on the Wingmaster and Police.

So, you can buy a Police model, if you can stand the price and find a local dealer who'll special order it and not scalp you, or you can buy a less expensive, easier to get Express based gun.

Here's a pretty good article that explains the difference.

Somewhere along the line Remington cheapend up the magazine tube cap. My ancient Wingmaster "Magnum" has a neat ball detent and a spring cup that pops right out. I gather the newer ones did away with the cup and have pressed in dimples to retain the spring?
