Opinion: Best .22 handgun

I’m in the market for a .22, for plinking and also getting my girlfriend to try out this whole “shooting” thing.

I only own .45s and it may not be the best for her to start with.

What do you suggest?

I fell in love with the M&P 22 compact. A svelte little handgun that all the women I've handed it to loved it. Only "malfunctions" I've ever had were trying out subsonic ammo that clearly stated it wouldn't cycle semi auto on the box. I've cleaned it once and it chugs along like a champ. It's the only semi auto 22 pistol I own, and will ever own.

I have a TX22 as well and it's a great gun, highly recommended. Ergonomics and reliability are incredible...16-round mag capacity is nice, too.

Can't go wrong with a Browning Buck Mark.

TX22, also. Great gun and a very reasonable price. So far it has worked with everything I have tried.

For starting a newbie, I highly recommend revolver. I have found, starting basic weapon safety rules, weapon loading, unloading and firing, can be less imposing/complicated with a revolver, for a newbie. You can probably barrow one, if you don't have one. The longer the barrel,... the better,... and sub sonic ammo functions perfectly. Which, I think, is less imposing for some newbies, as well.

I have the GSG Firefly (Sig Mosquito). Fun gun to shoot. Accurate and cheap, almost half the price of the TX22.

You can even get them with a threaded barrel. I mostly shoot my suppressed.

for a revolver, i always like letting people try a cheap fun heritage arms .22. then a ruger .22 pistol. I found most newbies like .22 rifles, less noise and easier to aim.

The 22 handgun I keep returning to is the tried, true, and proven Ruger MKII (or III I guess, although I hate the chamber loaded indicator). I've never found anything as bulletproof, dependable, and reliable. It's almost as accurate as a Smith 41 and I've never seen one break. Ever. I just wish they held 16 rounds like the TX22.

I will second the Ruger MKII.
Excellent guns that will last forever.
A little pain to take apart for cleaning at first , but once you get the hang of it they are not that bad.

I would consider a Kimber .22/.45 conversion unit or a K22.
I also like the SW22 Victory, Buck Mark and MK II Ruger in that order.
