Dan Wesson 1911 Finish

#1

Post by brandyspaw »

I'm looking for feedback from owners who have/had a Dan Wesson 1911 with their "Duty Finish" coating. I'm just curious about the long term durability of the finish. I'm asking because I'm looking at a Dan Wesson this time.

The Duty Finish is supposed to be a proprietary finish similar to Melonite but I have read that certain gun cleaners can damage it by discoloring it and/or leave spotting.

It’s basically melonite. My valor duty treat has held up well for 8 years and looks new.

I’ve heard the rumors about finish damage, but haven’t experienced it personally. Supposedly if you oil the discolored finish it restores it.

I own a few and have never had an issue, they look great.
In fact, I really like the finish.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, sometimes info on the internet gets passed around and you don't know if its intel from actual users or if its just some rumors that just gets passed around on the internet.
It seems some of the issues may be from the finish being very dry and devoid of all oils when it gets blasted with certain gun cleaners, brake cleaners, etc.

Well, for now here's a pic. I just bought it on Gunjoker and it hasn't gotten to my FFL guy yet. Its just a plain-vanilla Vigil in 9mm which I think is now discontinued. Here's a pic of it from the site:

It sure looks good, and Dan Wessons have a good reputation for quality. How about a range/function report and your overall impressions when she shows up?
Hope it all turns out well.
