Brother, I have YET to see ANY of the older Security-Speed-Service Six models in need of anything, much less wearing-out. But, that's not to say it's not possible. On the GP100 series, I can't imagine it every happening in a normal lifetime, LOL.

There's really only one main thing to look for on them, mechanically, same as any revolver...timing. That is, with a slow steady DA pull, does the cylinder rotate to the next chamber, and LOCK before the hammer falls? Likewise, does it reach lock-up when the cocking the hammer on each chamber?
IF so, great. Smith and Ruger check-out the same way on this....a bit different with Colts. IF that checks out, cock the hammer to single-action again. Give it firm nudge forward with your thumb on the back of the hammer spur. If it doesn't push-off, and fall forward, that's what you want.

Now for the visuals: Look at the forcing cone. That's where the bullet leaves the front of the cylinder and enters the rear of the barrel to begin the journey into the rifling. Any cracks in the edges of the cone? Any cracks UNDER the cone, which would be covered by the crane (or yolk) when the cylinder is closed? (Happens with alloy framed models, mostly). Check each of the chambers' barrel-cylinder-gap, or flash-gap. Eye it from the side against a well-lit background. Does the face of the cylinder remain parallel to the forcing cone? Equal amount of light between the two on each chamber?

That's the gist of it.

As to the SP101, it's a great, durable, small-frame 5-shot. BUT...it's flat BRUTAL with magnum loads,
and that's with both OEM and Pachmayr rubber grips which cushion things a bit. Ditto the LCR series, even worse. You really need the weight of the 6-rd frames, and 3"-4" barrel to get things tolerable.
With both wearing Hogues, and having exposed backstraps, my 686 4" is barely easter to shoot then my 4" Sec-6. The 4" GP100 trounces them both, having the weight of 686 and the built-in cushion of the OEM rubber grips.

Lots of good info, I think for a carry pistol im not as worried how it shoots magnum loads and would prefer having a smaller frame. I really like the look of the older revolvers like the sec six or speed six

I like the look of the security six too! But .. if your mostly shooting 38 and carrying 357 .. you might want to put the prelock S&W 19 on the list to look out for.

Keep your eye out here. I can swear I recently saw one under $600. I think without anyone trying to hit lotto on an old gun they have that they come in around mid $500

The curmudgeon has been at it around 30 plus years there.
Yes, he does Rugers and Colts...but much prefers Smiths.
Does Hi-Powers also, but prefers 1911's.
Knows his way around the Marlin leverguns, too.
