SPR/Competition type barrel preference

Post by Racewin »

If you were building a nice SPR/Competition type AR, taking cost into account, which of these would you prefer?

Assume 18" length, .223 Wylde, Rifle Gas, 1:7 Twist. (I know there are others out there, only looking at these specifically). Linked below for more info.

Rainier Ultra Match SPR Fluted - 33.4 oz, $400
Rainier Ultra Match Mk12 - 41 oz, $350
White Oak SPR Fluted - 36 oz, $335
White Oak SPR (non-fluted) - 41 oz, $275

After doing some research i settled on a WOA SPR 18". I believe it's the same one you have in the 4th link.

It shot fairly well with just some regular 55gr PMC. I have 5-6 different types of Match ammo to put through it but haven't had a chance to get back to the range.

Even if cost wasn't much of an issue, on reputation alone I would probably go with the WOA.

Yep, WOA is hard to beat for the money. I'd probably grab a matching/head-spaced bolt from them as well.

Or, if you want to level up a notch, I'd look at a Krieger SPR from CLE.

Bought a WOA complete upper over 10 years ago with the non-fluted version of the 18” SPR profile barrel. Still my favorite 5.56 and the only off the shelf upper that I’ve held onto. Shoots both the 69 and 77 matchkings extremely well.

I typically think fluting adds more cost than benefit, but I think I’d pay the extra $60 for the fluted barrel that’s in stock to avoid the 16 week lead time on the non-fluted version. I don’t know if they offer a matched bolt but I’d go that route if they do.

I prefer the balisticians advantage spr barrels. I’ve got the 18” spr fluted barrel. It shoots crazy well with 75gr Hornady bthp. I’ve had 5 of their barrels and the all shoot great. 223 and 65 Grendel.
