AK stock advice

#1

Post by Jack Dupp »

So I have a Vepr x39 with the slantback receiver and thumbhole stock. The rifle shoots great, but I'm not a big fan of the clunky wood furniture. With it having a slantback receiver, my options seem limited, but I'm not as knowledgeable about AKs as some here.

I was looking at https://www.cncwarrior.com/VEPR-Sidefolder-p/25366.htm and https://www.bonesteelarms.com/product/v ... ing-stock/, but I'm not sure how ergonomic and/or comfortable those tubular style stocks are to shoot.

Anyone have any experience or suggestions? Or even cheaper options? If Magpul made a slantback buttstock and handguard set, I'd be down with that. But I don't see that option.

Thanks.

In my opinion and experience,...while the Galil-type stock is comfortable at the shoulder and is rigid and strong, it unfortunately folds in such a way as to block the trigger and safety when folded. Russia had it correct when they had theirs on the AK101 series fold to the left. But that interferes with rails for optics.

Therefore, the solution is actually two-fold;...left-side folding AND a railed top cover like the Texas Weapons Systems Dog-Leg top cover. https://www.texasweaponsystems.com/product-p/33310.htm

I've got one on my Chinese AK as well as a Romanian side folding stock.

Krebs made an adapter for the Vepr to use ACE side folding stocks. ACE stocks can be folded to left or right, depending on your choice. https://www.legionusa.com/vepr-rifle-bu ... ustom.html

Thanks, SMG. Unfortunately the Krebs adapter is out of stock. Does your dog-leg mount/cover hold zero and stay rock solid? I was looking into that or the ultimak rail thingy.

It does ok. Considering the 7.62x39 is not usually a precision round, its not as critical as with other systems. I do occasionally get POI shift to a very minor degree, but not enough to annoy me. Worst I've experienced is that at 300 yards, if the top cover gets handled roughly, POI can shift about half a torso width.

This adapter allows you to use any standard AK stock although you will need to modify the stock due to the thickness of the adapter.

This one allows AR type buffer tubes, not my favorite on an AK but some ergonomic advantage could be had.
https://www.cncwarrior.com/VEPR-Slant-C ... /24827.htm

This one will allow you to convert it to a kind of PSL/SVD type stock.

Get the ultimak rail thingy. Mine never loses zero. Not even a torso width.

It’s worth it.

I have one of these. To be honest it isn't the closest fit from the outside but it doesn't cause stock wobble or anything. If you use regular wood stocks you will have to file them down. https://4shooters.com/product/vepr-slan ... r-sgm.html

https://www.carolinashooterssupply.com/ ... e-adpt.htm here is another one.

Then you should think about the length of pull. Warsaw pact stocks are pretty short for me, but I like a long FAL type length (and wear medium long BDUs). So mine has a wood spacer in leather at the back.

Also consider you need a long pistolgrip bolt, the Vepr is too short. I used threaded rod and a nut from Ace but the proper fix is buying the longer bolt.

If you use decent ammo the 7.62x39 can be accurate. I saw on a recent Firearm Blog review a Galil Ace got 2 moa with Fiocci and .8 moa with Federal Premium ammo. Apparently according to internet, different brands have different bullet diameters in addition to how accurate each load is, etc.

I had a 3 month battle with cnc warrior to ship my in stock parts pre-kungflu. I'm happy with the products but I think in this day and age it's all a crapshoot for customer service.

Just don't put an AR stock on an AK unless you want to call your dad and let him know.....
