Discuss rifles, carbines, and other long-arms here (AR-15's, AK's, etc...)

Ammo Recommendations .308

#1

Post by Copperhead »

Disregarding the present shortages...
I am looking to buy bulk quantities of 7.62x51 / .308
Need a specific manufacture and load for something that would be suitable for M1A as well as bolt guns.
Long range target shooting.
Is there such an animal?

Thank You

I shoot multigun (Heavy Metal class) so it isn't precision shooting. Targets are typically around 4 MOA in size but at Rio and Cowtown matches there are usually a few targets at 400 - 500 yards. I don't reload but my M1A really likes the Federal 168gr OTM loads. Not sure if there is a difference between the Gold match and the box marked "M1A". My M1A shoots them the same. I have around 500 rounds of M118LR (175gr) that I save for the few matches that push targets out to 600 yards. My M1A likes that stuff also. I'm sure there is load data out there to replicate those loads. As for bolt guns, can't help you there since I don't have one.

If availability and price were not a consideration, I would look to Black Hills 168.

Most F-Class shooters consider this one of the gold standards.

I'll agree with the 175gr Federal Gold Medal Match being king of the hill for good accurate 308win. The 168gr loading being second place.

The Black Hills loadings are very good as well I'm sure.

Lots of good options, none of which are cheap anymore. Before the panic, you could sometimes find the FGMM 175 on sale for about $0.80/rnd. Not anymore!

But for good factory options, most guys were shooting one of the following:

-FGMM 168SMK
-FGMM 175SMK
-FGMM 185 Juggernauts
-Hornady ELD-M
-Berger Hybrids
-Prime 175s

I think Nosler has factory loaded Custom Competitions (basically a ballistic copy of the FGMM SMK load), and Sig had a decent match option.

I agree with the above but My AIAW and LaRue OBR didn't perform as well with Black Hills ammo.
