Reduce Recoil on Long Rifle
I was at the range a few weeks ago to zero the Tikka "308".
After about 50 rounds my shoulder was done.
For people that have bad shoulders what are you doing to reduce the recoil and the impact on the shoulders?

In my experience, there is no free lunch. You can trade recoil for increased muzzle blast by using an effective muzzle brake. Assuming you wish for the rifle to still be lightweight so you can carry it around in the mountains while hunting, that is basically your only real option. Recoil pads help, of course, but only so much.

Re: Reduce Recoil on Long Rifle
boy howdy, recoil is the old guys bane for sure, i had to minimize my stroking the 300 win mag, years ago i got rid of the fifty, loved the shooter, but me shoulder said, nope wished i'd purchased one long ago before me bones got rickety,
have muzzle breaks on several cannons, minimizes the recoil, but the blasting noise is outrageous, so one gives up a tad for a little misery on the hearing size, probably why i have to use hearing aides, lol.
i have a vest that has a sorta sissy pad built into it, used one when i shot trap and skeet, now that is a pain, moved to a 20 ga, from a 12, better but still have a hundred or so rounds, the ache shows up, wished there was a solution, so far i have found none, well there is the pain killers, lol. at the end of a day of blasting, sometimes its worth it,
good luck with a remedy .

check with Joey (KingJoey). He may have a brake that can help you with that.

I went ahead and bought a muzzle brake and a new recoil pad with the black Friday deals still available. Should help save my shoulder a little.

Might try something like one of these shoulder pads. This site has a good selection. You can test whether one would help by draping a folded hand towel over your shoulder. If that reduces the shoulder problems then one of these better attached things should too. Or a coat with a built-in pad.

I'll try that if all else fails.aroyobob wrote: ↑November 27th, 2023, 12:12 pm Might try something like one of these shoulder pads. This site has a good selection. A Leadsled sure helps. I can put #40 of lead on mine for the larger guns. I always will shoot a few rounds after I am done with the Leadsled off bags just to confirm the zero. The Leadsled also allows more precise scope adjustments as it holds the rifle in position well when adjusting the turrets.

Brakes, limb savers, and making the stock heavier also works.
If you have a plastic stock, remove the butt piece and stuff a bunch of heavy things in there.
Or you can just buy a shoulder pad or a "man bra" as my wife calls it.
