Vets and parents of soldiers,
What are some gift ideas to get your kid before being deployed? Vets, anything you wish you have received before deployment?
Thanks

Nothing before he leaves unless it is a medallion or something to wear on his dogtag chain maybe a leatherman mut (has ar/m4 tools on it). He is going to be getting a lot of equipment to organize as it is. Once over packages with things in it like wipes, foot powder, socks and such.... many times i would have fought for a brand new pair of soft cushiony socks

boots.
issued boots (atleast the ones I received) sucked.
If he is wearing coyote brown or tan boots, 5.11, Converse, Oakley, Danner (my preference) are all good ones. I had alot of my junior sailors b**** about paying for boots, but it is a good investment. Your Soldier/Sailor/Airman/Marine will be wearing them for a year, sucks if they hurt or fit poorly.
also a decent pocket knife. often understimated, but used daily.

Nothing.
Wait till he knows where he is at and what he is doing. Have him send you a list. Send that.

Yes, wait until he gets there.
I sent my son some snacks when he was in boot camp and the drill sergeant shared them with the whole unit. I also sent some Guns & Ammo and Small Arms Review magazines. The drill sergeant kept them for himself and said "Your dad seems like a cool dude".

Parris Island
I got a 5lb box of cookies in boot. I got to eat them ALL. They were home baked from my girlfriend and mother covered with GOBS of that cheap dollar store 100% sugar icing.
I got to eat them ALL in one session on the quarter deck, 12 cookies at a time in between sit ups, mtn climbers, up downs etc.....
I dislike cookies 36yrs later
