JUST IN CASE SOME FORGET, SINCE THEY DON'T TEACH HISTORY ANYMORE

This is the place for those men and women who have given of themselves in military service to our country. Feel free to discuss anything as it relates to prior (or current) service... and we all thank you for your service!

Even my grandmother served in WWII. Volunteers and conscripts, couldn't tell the difference when they were all over there. Definitely a different world than today.

That's hard to watch, cuz my dad was a ball turret gunner in a TBF Avenger. Joined the Navy in Feb '42 and flew till the end of the war mostly in a TBF in the pacific theater. Most people think that it was just a torpedo plane, but from what he told me they mostly dropped one 2000lb or four 500lb bombs on mostly island targets like airfields and ships that were docked unloading supplies. That's where most of the scary flying was because of the ground anti aircraft fire, and having to fly fairly low to be able to hit the target. The first radioman he flew with was killed on a mission from ground fire. He told me he wasn't too worried about being killed by fighters because they always had good fighter escort from Hellcats and Corsairs, and those pilots were very protective of the bomber crews. If a Jap fighter came anywhere near, those Navy and Marine fighters would swarm and shoot the hell out of them.

If my dad was still alive he'd be disgusted by what has happened to this country, considering what he went through and all the friends that he knew that died during the war.

God, Family, Country actually was the way of life, the mindset, the ideal, and worth defending with all you had.
Your correct.

Today is the day the LT Audie Murphy jumped on the back of a burning tank destroyer, opened up with a MA-2 and single-handedly stopped a German advance during WWII.

There is still some amazing folks in the Services, the media just does not share it, even stars and stripes is politicized, bummer really, as each generation does have its own Heroes, since 911, the word Hero has been decimated in regards to what i feel is the true meaning.
