I wonder if that includes the Marines who each memorial weekend have a group stand 24 hour honor guard

What a terrible time for this to happen as Memorial Day was always a big day at the Arizona every year.

I used to ago past it on the way to/from Ford Island every Sunday when I was stationed at Ft. Shafter and went to the memorial around 20 times with Mrs. Flash since then.

Yes, it is a special place! Such terrible timing with this weekend. Glad they saw it and nobody was hurt.

The USS Arizona Memorial and the American Cemetery in Normandy are among a handful of places all Americans should feel obligated to visit. Arlington and Gettysburg are two others.

Sad to hear the Memorial is currently closed.

I was there about 5 years ago. It was an experience I will always remember.

Has anyone heard if it will be re-opening anytime soon? Some friends were thinking of going to Hawaii in a couple of months.

I just looked and they're saying the damage is worse than they thought so it's closed indefinitely.

Be aware that you can still get a tour that takes you out in a boat and gets you close to the memorial, but you can't get off at the Memorial. It's better than nothing.

Yes, still worth it, I have been there twice. A humbling experience each time.

Hopefully it can be repaired quickly as not disembarking would really lessen the experience.

I visited it once and as you walked inside you could feel the presence of the crew still manning her below the waves.

Sorry for the necropost, but according to https://www.nps.gov/valr/faqs.htm, the memorial is expected to be opened again in March of this year.

Excellent news. Got a friend going to Hawaii in March so he may or may not make it. I'll let him know.

Flash, would you do me a favor. Can you ask your friend to get some water from the harbor as near Arizona as he can.... I have family still inside there. I would like to put some water with my dirt from the Belleau wood wheat field and Iwo Jima sand.
