Ah, I was just a cold war hero keeping nukes in the air so the USSR wouldn't kill us all here.

Ditto, I turned legal age for drinking in Texas in my home state (18 at the time, 1980), in boot camp, in San Antonio :o

I joined when the first gulf adventure was just being whispered about. I was an army construction worker so I can only wish to sound cooler like some high speed operator. Only high speed thing I managed was a Jack hammer.

Funny thing ... I am frequently asked at businesses, IE Teds Range .. am I a vet or first responder since those groups get a discount. I either answer no or answer yes but I don't need the discount.

Not trying to sound all sanctimonious and I don't begrudge anyone who takes them but .. I figure .. I researched, visited recruiting offices and willingly and with full knowledge of what I was doing volunteered for service. I feel weird being rewarded for something I volunteered to do. I signed .. no one forced me.

Now you Nam vets who were ripped from your life by a draft .... you absolutely deserve the small token that some businesses are willing to give. Shoot .. you didnt ask for that and I salute you. That must have sucked.

Certainly dont mean to hurt anyones feelings .. just my personal take on it and whether I personally feel entitled to anything extra.

Then, there are us draft dodgers that dodged it by volunteering.

As the salty NCO's would say "Quit your whining, you volunteered for this"
Instantly shut the bitching down.

I joined at 34yrs old, shortly after 9/11, went to boot camp at Great Mistakes at 34 as well.

I have spent almost half my career deployed, 4 times in the ME in body armor with an M4, and twice to sea, 7mo each.

I can't complain too much. I was injured on a ME tour and had to spend some time in Germany, then SD to get put back together, but so what...I am home.

We talk sh!t about each other, Navy fags, Chair force, crayon eaters, window lickers, jar heads, etc. but at the end of the day, we are all family. A big, f ucked up family, but family all the same.

Hats off to all of you, I would buy any of you a beer.

34!! Good on you. I went in in my mid 20's and I was considered the old man. Held my own just fine through basic and after but yup .. they called me old at 26. There was one other guy in basic about my age but everyone else was just out of school.
