Elk. Anyone tag out?

#1

Post by Mini14 »

Had a 5A bull tag. Was out the past week and no luck. Saw one bull and he ran in a canyon before I could even lift my gun up.

Saw tons of cows but just that one bull.
Also saw 3 lions a momma a two cubs. A nice 3x3 Muley and 2 rams.

Anyone get a bull down?

Lmao I’ve lived here my whole life of 33 years. Been putting in since I was old enough and have landed 3 tags. 1 has been filled. The late rifle hunt is a very hard hunt if you don’t do your homework. Then when ya do there’s 80 people driving the roads. Still always a good time when I hunt with my old man if we get a kill or not. Good luck to ya on the draws. From now on I’m putting in for all trophy hunts for rifle and picking up a bow this year to take advantage of OTC tags.

No more draws for me. I'm full time in TX now.
That and I'm too much of a crippled crotchety bastard to do all that walking anymore.

Add insult to injury the first time my son put in he got drawn.

Lol

I have killed four Bull elk in Arizona over the years.

I went with a friend of mine last month on a cow hunt in 3C.
He has the CHAMP permit so we were limited to how far we could walk.
We hunted ever day.
We saw 4 the first morning but couldn't get a shot.
After that we didn't see any cows.
We did see quit a few Bulls.
I figured they were on the reservation so the second to the last day we hunted the border of the reservation.
We saw probably 30 cows that morning.
They would come out of the forest , cross the road and jump the fence. Then just mill around.
I could have shot them with a pistol.
We had one that came out and stood about 40-50 yards away broadside.
By time my friend could get situated for a shot another one came out and stood right beside it.
He didn't want to chance the shot thinking the bullet would go through one and into the other one.
Then they both walk away , side by side.
The next day we went back to the same spot.
When we turned down the road you could see the eyes shining in the head lights.
Then they crossed the road and jumped the fence before the sun came up.
When the sun came up they were just milling around and grazing with a heard of wild horses.
I could have killed them with a pistol also.
They obviously know where they are safe.
There was another one he could have shot but it was on the other side of the road from us and you can't shoot across a road. So it walk over and jumped the fence also.
End of story he didn't get one , but it was still fun.

We talked to a couple different game wardens and they said that as far as they know only one elk was killed during that hunt.

We did see well over 100 deer and quite a few wild horses.
They seemed to be everywhere.
