Apache/San Carlos gfd?

This is the place to talk about general outdoor activities like fishing, off-roading, hiking, camping, hunting, mountain climbing, etc...

Apache/San Carlos gfd?

#1

Post by iotarho »

Had an opportunity about 15 years back to do a 5 day hunt elk there, beautiful country and a good experience. Recently back in AZ and reading up, draw and tag info on the native websites looks like a bit of a cluster**** post-COVID. Anyone have any experience working with game officials and what they're doing with their big game hunts on either San Carlos or White Mountain Apache?

I know Homer Stevens runs a guide service on the San Carlos reservation.
I don't have any contact information.

Thanks McKnight.. that'd be a good start, sounds like he'll know as much as anyone about how things are going over there. I'll do some digging for contact info.

The San Carlos is a beautiful place to hunt for sure. Getting any info on the website is difficult as it is not updated very well and they seem to never answer the phones.

San Carlos is a great place to hunt elk , but you better have deep pockets.

I won a bear hunt there last year in an Arizona Elk Foundation auction. The Reservation shut down after the auction, due to Covid, and no one ever returned my calls or emails. The Foundation says the Res will honor the hunt this year, but they recently released the 2021 hunt regulations and all quotas refer to tribal members only. Good luck getting any information out of those people.

As long as COVID is going on, I wouldn't expect anything unless you're a tribe member.

Thanks guys... last drive out to NM on the 60 early in the Fall, every junction into tribal land had a manned checkpoint as the reservations were basically closed to non tribe members or essential workers.

The tribes have a pretty amazing resource in the wilderness out there, disappointing that it's not being managed or utilized better.

I have done some rifle javelina hunts on the San Carlos. Very reasonably priced. Last hunt I did there was as a helper on a Coues Hunt. We stayed at the Apache Gold Casino. Great food and warm beds. We had a great time. This was precovid. Guy I know is handling their web page. His name is John Hassock. Goes by Aussie John. If you look him up on Facebook he might be able to provide you some info.
