It's the primers. And cleaning with modern solvents has little effect. The older cleaning solvents had a amount of water integrated into it that would dissolve and wash the salt physically out of your bore. 44-40 smokeless blank powder in a blackpowder gun is a NO.
Good way to loose a few fingers and earn a new nickname like "Lucky" or "Stubs". Or get to wear a neat eyepatch as you loose an eye to the cylinder or top strap shrapnel.

I've had good luck using seconds.

Usually as stated above it's something trivial that someone is gonna complain about.
Sized .001 off, mislabeled, weight variation is just outta spec, badly plated etc
