We met with him a few times when he was doing Kenpo at some other guy's place many years ago. We went there to "enlighten" them with information. They said they had a "gun guy" didn't want anything to do with us. We met, f*** useless. They were certainly amazed at what we were doing with Kenpo, but, their Chief Instructor warned them off of us, said we were just trouble, so they started ignoring us. Their "Chief Instructor" is also useless, but, he was the one giving them rank, and oddly enough, they were boosted in rank in a very short time, you know, to keep them paying. Skip Hancock is the Chief Instructor's name, talks a lot, does little, and has few skills. He was around when Parker was around and got some rank from him, so that's his "claim to fame". My instructor was Parker's protege', and another guy named Huk Planas. They both teach very differently, but they have the same information, and they're very choosy about who they give the most to. Mind you, I trained with Mr. Parker as well, in the W. LA studio, and got rank from him as well, but it doesn't mean squat if you don't have the information to back it up.

So, he was "wax on", and you're more "wax off"?]]>

Nope, they don't even know "sand the floor", or "paint the fence".

* First - I have exactly zero knowledge regarding John Correia's relative competence as a martial artist... It sounds like he's probably gotten in with a school that is pretty commercial - that's too bad. On the other hand - whether he's good or not - if he's actively working on something - he spends more time on the mats than I do these days... (not proud of my nearly totally sedentary lifestyle... but it is what it is right now).
* Second - I have very little knowledge regarding his relative competence as a technical firearms instructor - I've never attended any of his in person stuff (paid or unpaid) and I've never been instructed by him or evaluated his shooting prowess. I've watched very little of his "technical" content (re gun drills etc.). What I have heard him say, that I appreciate, is along the lines of "if you are going to own and carry firearms it is irresponsible to do so without working on your craft... you have to spend time practicing, shooting, and becoming competent if you are going to be a responsible gun owner." With that - I fully agree.
* Lastly - I do find his Youtube channel useful in terms of its ability (and purpose - I think) to cause me to think through scenarios, and to take "mental reps" regarding defensive use of force scenarios. I find that he advocates for a very similar philosophy to mine in these areas (what I see as a legally and morally healthy view of when and how the force escalation continuum should work).

So - is he a bit of a self-aggrandizing blowhard? You could probably say that... but you could probably say that about just about everyone who has created a significant market presence in the social media space... and at least his stuff drives critical thought...

My 2 cents...]]>

My 2 cents...

There are times that he give "very bad advice", hell, Carlos calls him out on it all the time. He's spent exactly zero hours as any sort of peace officer or soldier, so, his classes can't make up that experience. I make no claims about my shooting abilities, but, I can teach a beginner to shoot really well in about 30 minutes, especially chicks. They somehow just know how to point the gun where it needs to be, I don't try to understand why. I just teach them the basics, trigger control, recoil management, stance, and sight picture. What they do after that is on them.

Now, on the martial arts side, yea, technically, I'm an expert, according to rank and time, but, honestly, I'm still learning everyday about somethings I haven't seen, or, have somehow overlooked to have value. I constantly reinforce these ideas with active and resisting partners. If my guys can reverse, so can someone else, so, something still needs to be tweaked. I want my techniques to work on 90+ % of people, the other 10%, I'm not concerned with, they usually don't cause trouble for me, but that's why I carry a gun and a blade, for that one time they do and I'm outclassed.

Have a great, gun carryin', Kenpo day
