Combat wounded SEAL Mike Day has passed

#1

Post by Suck My Glock »

Day was the assault force commander AND the lead man through the door in Fallujah in April of 2007 when he stepped into a heavy close quarters machinegun fight. He took 27 hits from gunfire, with his body armor only stopping 11 of them, not to mention the grenade shrapnel. In the course of this, his main weapon was disabled and he transitioned to his sidearm, taking out 3 enemy combatants WITHOUT hitting the women and children in close proximity. For this he was bestowed the Silver Star as well as Purple Heart.

Day spent 2 years in physical recovery and retired in 2010.

No word on whether his recent death was related to his service injuries or not.

His balls may require a separate casket.

Can you imagine how much strength he needed to survive the mental and physical pain that he had had to endure? Rest in peace and God bless you Sir.

This guts me... I recently read (well - listened to) his book Perfectly Wounded in which he talks very openly about his suicidal urges stemming from his PTSD. Prayers for his surviving family.

Unfortunately, when you've seen the elephant and how cheap life is, suicide seems reasonable. That's especially true for those who have been brought up in our Western civilized environment. If you find yourself in a situation where you have to take a human life or see a human life taken, life itself becomes less valuable. There's a great study of this phenomenon titled "On Killing" by Dave Grossman. It explains how some of us can be totally devastated by taking a life, but there are others who can turn the humanity off when necessary and turn it back on to function normally. Many of our warriors who perform selflessly in the field like Mike Day but later suffer from PTSD and take their own lives are of the former. You never read about the latter types committing suicide because they are able to completely compartment those actions and emotions and live "normal" lives.
